Hyaluronic acid injections in aesthetic medicine

Hyaluronic acid is one of the natural components of our skin. Purified and made injectable, it is now used in aesthetic medicine to fill wrinkles and reshape the face. You will find here its aesthetic indications, the rates charged, the usual treatment methods and consequences, as well as the opinion of our association of doctors on this treatment.

Hyaluronic acid in aesthetic medicine

This molecule, injected into the skin, attracts water like a sponge and thus contributes to skin hydration. In doing so, it fills in areas of the dermis that have collapsed or broken, revealing furrows, wrinkles and fine lines. This is why we call it a filling implant. It is perfectly tolerated and absorbable, used mainly for the treatment of facial and neck wrinkles, for more than 20 years.

These injections can reduce, correct or even remove wrinkles, provided they are placed very precisely and in the right quantity. They can also modify volumes, since the appearance of thicker and more concentrated hyaluronic acids, specially designed for remodelling (for example cheekbones, cheeks, mouth…).

In principle, no testing is necessary because it is not an allergenic substance. Today, good products are very pure and allergies are very rare.

The various laboratories now offer many versions of the product, at varying concentrations and viscosities. They can be adapted to different indications (remodelling of facial volumes, smoothing of fine wrinkles or revitalization and rehydration of the skin), but also to different skin types.

The different types of hyaluronic acid injections

Wrinkle filling

To fill or smooth a wrinkle, the injection is very superficial (1 to 2 mm). It is done with a very fine needle allowing the immediate removal of wrinkles and furrows, without over-correction. Thus, the result is immediate. The doctor must know how to vary the depth of implantation of the product to obtain the desired effect (smoothing of a superficial wrinkle, filling of a deep wrinkle or a furrow…).

The practitioner’s experience makes all the difference in the results obtained by injecting hyaluronic acid.

An additional session may be necessary after 3 to 6 weeks, especially if this is the first time the area has been treated.

The areas most affected by this type of injection are:

  • nasolabial folds (on each side of the mouth)
  • fine wrinkles on the upper lip
  • wrinkles or “bitterness folds (from the corners of the mouth down)
  • jugal wrinkles (vertical in the middle of the cheeks)
  • lion’s wrinkles between the eyebrows
  • crow‘s feet wrinkles (if they are deep down, around the eyes)…

In theory, any wrinkle-forming break in the dermis can be filled with hyaluronic acid. However, very fine wrinkles under the lower eyelids (suborbital) are not corrected by filling injections because the skin is too thin to integrate a product thick enough to last over time.

Similarly, a skin of the cheeks that is completely faded and dotted with fine fine lines is not usually treated by filling injections, regardless of the product injected. Instead, exfoliation or abrasion techniques (peels, lasers, etc.) should be used.

Remodelling of facial volumes

To restore lost shapes to a face, the doctor will more readily use a foam tip needle (micro-cannula) to avoid bruising. Indeed, the injections are, in this case, deeper, and the risk of bruising is greater with conventional needles.

Higher amounts of concentrated and thicker hyaluronic acid are usually required. The cost is therefore higher.

We can then routinely:

  • hemming the lips and plumping the mouth again
  • fill cheeks or cheekbones
  • correct the nose or chin
  • fill in temples that are too hollow
  • fill out ringsetc….

Advantages of hyaluronic acid

The product is almost “natural” because it is identical to that of the human body. The effect of the filling injection is immediate. There are few or no annoying consequences. If the doctor is delicate, bruises or bruises are rare. The results are completely reversible and the product can even be dissolved, if necessary.

Hyaluronic acid is not allergenic so there is no need to test the product before the injection session.

Maintenance of results

It is good to repeat the filling injection every six to nine months, sometimes less in the first few sessions. Preferably, we do not wait for the wrinkles or furrows to reappear completely but we try to preserve the results.

The products used to reshape volumes (cheekbones, temples, lips, nose correction, deep furrows…) last longer: 12 to 18 months depending on the people and products used.
